Polyembryony in Taxodium mucronatum Ten. (Montezuma bald cypress) Taxodiaceae.

Taxodium mucronatum seeds collected from the Forest Research Institute campus in Dehra Dun, Uttar Pradesh, India, were subjected to germination tests at 25 degrees C in a germination chamber. Two radicles emerged in one of the seeds that germinated. After two days, the cotyledons of the seedlings appeared but were intertwined and separated only on full emergence from the seed. The twin seedlings differed in size. They were potted in a polybag containing a mixture of soil, sand and farmyard manure. After four days of transplanting the seedlings, the smaller of the two shriveled and died. The other one continued to grow normally until after nine days of transplanting, where it wilted and eventually died. This is the first report of the occurrence of polyembryony in T. mucronatum.
