Interception of Tropical Nut Borer Hypothenemus obscurus - A New Host Record on Ornamental Palm Seed Butia rigida

The import of seeds / plant propagative materials are permitted to be imported through Chennai Port, as it is the only notified point of entry for Southern Region of India. Ornamental palm seeds are being regularly imported into India through the portto augment the cultivation of new / exotic species. Such import of ornamental palm seeds from any country is regulated under Schedule-VI of The Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Order, 2003 (PQ Order, 2003) under The Destructive Insectsand Pests Act, 1914, with additional declaration for freedom from bacteria / viruses / viroids and required to be grown under Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) (confinement area) for a period of 10 - 12 months. The import of seeds of Butia spp. from any country requires freedom from quarantine weed seeds and the plants for propagation needs to be free from soil and to be grown under PEQ for a period of 10-12 months.
