New Host Record of Palm Seed Beetle, Caryobruchus gleditsiae on Ornamental Palm Seed Butia rigida

A consignment of 8.5 Kgs of ornamental palm seeds comprised of 6 genera inclusive of 500 numbers of Butia rigida were imported (post parcel) during August, 2010 from USA (Florida) through Chennai Port, as it is the only notified entry point for importof seeds / plant propagative materials for Southern Region. The import of ornamental palm seeds / seed sprouts from any country is regulated under Schedule-VI of The Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Order, 2003 (PQ Order, 2003) under The Destructive Insects and Pests Act, 1914, with additional declaration for freedom from bacteria / viruses / viroids and required to be grown under Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) (confinement area) for a period of 10 - 12 months. The import of seeds of Butia spp. from any country requires freedom from quarantine weed seeds and the plants for propagation needs to be free from soil and to be grown under PEQ for a period of 10-12 months.
