Sorghum is one of the important food, feed and fodder crops, cultivated widely throughout tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. Shoot fly {Atherigona soccata Rondani, Muscidae: Diptera) is considered to be the most destructive pest of sorghum in Asia, Mediterranean Europe and Africa. The maggot causes damage to 1-4 week old seedlings leading to ‘dead- heart’ formation. Use of insecticides for the control of this pest has some limitations as shoot fly is an internal pest and prices of sorghumare low as compared to other crops. Hence, it is necessary to develop resistant/ tolerant varieties, which will provide pest control at minimum cost to farmers. Some morpho-physiological and biochemical characters of plant such as seedling vigour, leafglossiness, trichome density and silica content are responsible for resistance or susceptibility to shoot fly (Tarun Varma and Singh 2000; Dhillon et al., 2006; Gomashe et al., 2010). These kinds of characters are quantified and new shoot fly resistant/tolerant genotypes are identified using marker assisted selection (MAS) technique. These selections can be used on further in resistance breeding programme. Present studies were focused on the evaluation of MAS lines (developed by sorghum biotechnologist, Parbhani) against shoot fly with resistant and susceptible checks.
