Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) is an important vegetable crop and cultivated in 0.54 m ha in India, producing 7.4 million tons annually (FAO, 2005). Root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.) infection results in an estimated crop loss up to 73% intomato (Chhabra and Mahajan, 1974). Since tomato is consumed directly as salad, besides its use as a vegetable in varied preparations, use of pesticides in its cultivation is highly discouraged (Saravanapriya et al, 2004). As the nematode is widely distributed, usage of resistant cultivars is an environmentally acceptable and economic option. National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources Regional Station, Hyderabad facilitates import of germplasm for research and utilization in crop improvement including tomato on regular basis in India. The present study is aimed at identification of resistant sources in imported germplasm including wild species of tomato for local (Andhra Pradesh) population of Meloidogyne javanica (Treub) Chitwood.
