A study was conducted during the winter (rabi) season of 1990-91 in Kanpur, India to determine the effects of nitrogen levels (0-60 kg/ha), row spacing (45 and 60 cm), and water conservation practices on rainfed mustard (Brassica juncea) on eroded soil. The water conservation practices were: control, interculture-one weeding and hoeing, and paddy straw mulch. Plant growth, yield, and water use were higher under the 60 cm row spacing. The paddy straw mulch significantly improved growth, yield attributes, seed yields, and water use efficiency. The seed yield increased by 0.147, 0.258, and 0.355 t/ha with the application of 20, 40, and 60 kg N/ha, respectively, in comparison with the control.
