摘要

Species naturally regenerating on abandoned limestone quarry sites in the outer Himalaya of Uttar Pradesh are listed and discussed, together with details of successfully planted agroforestry species, and a brief account of the 4 degraded vegetationstages found in the area as a result of mining activities. Physical soil conservation measures carried out are outlined, and species regenerating on particular site types are described, as are the results of various tree species trials. Choice of speciesfor these sites is discussed - initially those plant species which provide an immediate 'carpet' and have high root binding characteristics are the best proposition in such sites. Details of the various agroforestry species regenerating under secondarysuccession, and successful reforested species are tabulated with information on their uses.
