NITROGEN UPTAKE AND QUALITY OF PEARL MILLET AS INFLUENCED BY MOISTURE CONSERVATION PRACTICES AND N FERTILIZATION

A field experiment was conducted with pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) during the rainy seasons of 1990 and 1991 at Agra to study the effect of tillage depth, sowing methods and N levels on yield, quality and nitrogen uptake. Among the tillage depthsdeep tillage was found superior in terms of grain yield, protein content and its production and N uptake in comparison to shallow andmedium tillage treatments. Similarly, ridge and furrow sowing method proved superior to flat sowing method which increased mean grain yield, protein production and N uptake by 17.0, 24.4 and 23.1 per cent, respectively. Increasing N levels significantly increased the grain yield, protein content, protein production and N uptake with maximum values under 120 kg ha~(-1) N level. The pooled values of optimum yield dose and grain yield were 106 kg N ha~(-1) and 24.33 q ha~(-1) grain, respectively. The nature of response curve forN levels was found quadratic for both years and also for pooled results.
