The presence of Giardia and other zoonotic parasites of urban dogs in Hobart, Tasmania

With the steady decline of human hydatidosis in Tasmania associated with a very successful hydatid eradication programme (Goldsmid and Pickmere 1987), there has been a marked decrease in awareness of the potential dangers of zoonotic diseases harboured by dogs in the State. This is all the more surprising in the light of the recognition of newer zoonotic infections such as cryptosporidiosis and changing views on the epidemiology of giardiasis (Meyer 1985; Bemerick and Erlandsen 1988; Faubert 1988; Collyer et al 1992; Thompson et al 1993).
