The increase in energy requirements, hike in fuel costs, depletion of fuel reserves and dependence on foreign resources made it necessary to develop renewable source of energy. At present, wind machines represent one of the major resources for supplementary energy needs of our country. Just 2% of the sunlight that falls on the earth's surface is converted into kinetic wind energy, but that itself is a tremendous amount of energy. How much of it can be tapped to help human activities will depend on the volume and velocity of the wind. Wind power is a promising energy option for various applications because it is: 1. Clean and environment friendly. Wind-power plants do not emit pollutants in the process of power generation and thereby safeguard atmosphere against acid rain, green-house gases and radiation hazards. 2. Inexhaustible, unlike fossil fuels whose reserves are fast shrinking. Economical, since wind is available free, there is no risk on inflation due to increase in fuel costs; wind energy saves both in terms of money and fuel. 3. Wind mill is safe to operate and requires less maintenance. 4. The use of wind power to compress air can be used for the aeration of various water-bodies, particularly fish-pond aeration and other water loasins where there are detrimental environmental effects.
