Use of distillery spentwash for alkali soil reclamation, treated distillery effluent for fertigation of crops

The untreated distillery spentwash (DSW) @ 0.15 million litres/ha can be used as an amendment for the reclamation of non-saline, calcareous alkali soil. It should be applied during summer and a time lag of 40 days should be allowed to overcome the dep letion of oxygen from the soil environment. The DSW alone or in combination with gypsum is effective in spot reclamation of alkali soils for agroforestry. The primary treated distillery effluent (PTDE) can be used as a source of fertigation either as one time pre-plant application or frequent application of diluted (1:20 or 1:30) effluent. Since both DSW and PTDE contain enough potassium, its application could be avoided infields treated with DSW or PTDE. The undiluted PTDE is also recommended for irrig ating established plantation of coconut and cashew.
