There were three key findings of a 1997 survey conducted by AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rucken), a German association dedicated to the prevention of back injuries: there has been a dramatic increase in the number of back ailments; back problems are triggered by outside factors including stress and sitting for long periods; and ergonomic aids are an important part of providing therapy for these problems. AGR polled approximately 1,000 German orthopaedists as part of Back Consultations 1997— environmental influences and musculoskeletal illnesses. It sent questionnaires to the 700 orthopaedic health practitioners who agreed to participate and asked them to share information based on their practical experience. More than 200 returns were subsequently evaluated.
