Two principal moves were necessary to create the V8 XJ. The first, obviously, was to engineer the car to accept the engine. The second was to create new versions of the V8 to enable the XJ to be offered as a comprehensive range rather than with a single engine size and output. This required the creation of a smaller-capacity (3.2-litre) version of the V8, and of a higher-output (370 ps) supercharged version of the existing 4.0-litre unit.
