The expression 'opening a can of worms' is pretty common when you're talking about fishing - but last time I put finger to keyboard for this column there was more than worms in the can.At this point I must confess to breaking my own golden rule and abusing my editor's gracious hospitality by discussing politics in the previous issue of Australian Sugarcane. A long time ago I vowed I would never discuss politics, religion or my mother-in-law in print. This vow isn't based on any idea of social etiquette - it's really because I find political discussions about as entertaining as converting septic tanks to sewerage - which is why I never became a plumber when I finished my apprenticeship.
