An emission control device produced by UK automotive consultancy Hawtal Whiting primarily as an add-on for older vehicles has received the backing of the US Environmental Protection Agency and is exciting intense interest around the world John Boley reports. The World Bank is considering a scheme to fund its mass fitment to vehicles in the large cities of poorer countries where pollution is a huge problem. The EVEC, or Environmental Vehicular Emission Control, cost around $10 million to develop. Still shrouded in a good deal of commercial secrecy, it is a black metal cylinder about 10 cm long and 4 cm in diameter. It is likely to sell for between $10 and $90.
