Rational Use of Antimicrobials in Dairy Production and Practice for Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobials are compounds that either inhibit or cease the growth of microbes by targeting cellular functions that are required for maintenance or replication (Tortora et al, 2010). In practice these agents are medicines that are used to treat infections in humans and animals caused by microbes especially bacteria (not viruses or parasites). Antimicrobials are therefore considered essential drugs for human and animal health (OIE, 2013).
