Bovine mastitis is one of the most costly diseases affecting dairy cattle throughout the world and so also in India. India has Cattle & buffalo population of 199.1 and 105.3 million respectively (NDDB, 2007). Overall economic loss due to bovine mastitis in India is estimated to be ? 7165.51 crores, a number which increased from 1607.2 crores a decade and half before (Bansal and Gupta, 2009). Furthermore, mastitis accounted for 26% of the total cost of all dairy cattle diseases. Although clinical mastitis is detected easily, subclinical mastitis is a silent killer which mostly goes undetected unless tested by laboratory based tests!
