Fertiliser Industry in the Service of the Nation

Indian Fertiliser Industry has entered into the hundredth year of its existence since the establishment of the first superphosphate factory at Ranipet 1h~ 1906.There has been spectacular growth in the production capacity and production of fertilisers,particularly during eighties and early nineties to meet the rising demand.The industry is one of the best in the world in terms of capacity utilization and energy consumption.The paper highlights the importance of the fertiliser industry in India and its contribution to the nation in terms of agricultural growth,import substitution,farm services and in facilitating the growth and income of the related industries.Unfortunately,the momentum of growth has lost its pace in recent years and there has been stagnation in the domestic production resulting in large scale imports of fertilisers.There is an urgent need for a conducive policy to sustain the existing capacities and also attract investment for new capacities to meet the growing demand for fertilisers in future.
