Rover has just spent £95 million and Jaguar pound;60 million on new paint plants in the UK. Duerr, the company responsible for these projects, is now the world's leading specialist in the building, equipping and operation of automotive paint facilities. Established in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1895, Duerr entered the automobile industry in the 1920s. The business went through hard times during the recession and it was not until the post-war years that the company turned to automated painting systems. Then, a plant for spraying pressed steel wheels was established and a "single-chamber gyrowheel phosphate spray system" developed and patented by the company. Passing from components to complete bodies, the company began to expand. In 1963, Duerr carried out its first experiment with elec-trophoretic painting and rapidly introduced the technology to mass production, first at Ford's Genk plant in Belgium.
