Wheat is an important food crop in India. To feed the increasing number of human and animals we have to increase its production and productivity. Efficient nutrient management is one of the key factor for improving the production and productivity of wheat. The decreasing availability and increasing cost of fertiliser as well as to preserve the soil and underground water resources, the strategies for improving the nutrient use efficiencies must be devised. For higher nutrient use efficiency, besides integrating synthetic fertiliser with organic fertiliser and applying fertilisers at right dose, right source, right time and right method, other crop management/agronomic strategies such as laser land leveling, optimum sowing time, suitable cultivar, proper crop stand, crop rotation and efficient weed and water management is very essential. There is wide variation in fertiliser usage in different wheat growing zone. In NWPZ, majority of the farmers are applying -N in excess whereas in NEPZ, PZ and CZ, lower than the blanket recommendation. Through balanced fertilisation, we can improve the productivity as well as the profit margins of the farmers. Therefore, it is imperative to increase the fertiliser use efficiency.
