Adsorption studies of phenol and quinoline (usual hazardous wastes in the effluents of steel plants and other chemical industries) were conducted on low grade carbonaceous materials including low grade high ash coals, washery rejects and fly ash which are also generated as wastes from various coal utilizing processes. Spectral and thermogravimetric analysis indicated the ability of these low grade materials to adsorb phenols and quinoline. Washery rejects apeared to have maximum adsorption capacity. The increased calorific value and volatile matter content of the adsorbed materials were indicative of upgradation of low grade carbonaceous materials through adsorption of waste organics. The upgraded coal materials may have higher consumption efficiency in modified boilers with minimization of environmental pollution. However, further research in this direction may be required.
