ECONOMICS OF OPEN ROSE FLOWER CULTIVATION IN SAURASHTRA REGION OF GUJARAT STATE

Rose is the most ancient and popular flower grown the world over. It is a versatile plant adopted to varying climate conditions. It is one of the top selling flowers in the global flower trade and stands first among the commercial cut flowers. In India, it is cultivated commercially for flowers. There is considerable demand for rose in the form of loose flower, dry petals, long stemmed flower and its by products such as rose water, Gulkand, and Perfume in domestic as well as export market. Nearly 1.61 lakh hectares of land is estimated to be under flower cultivation producing 8.70 lakh metric tonnes of flowers in India. The share of Gujarat in India in rose flower production is 12 and 6 per cent in case of cut flower and loose flowers, respectively.About 14979 hectare of land is under flower cultivation in Gujarat, producing 127779 metric tonnes of flowers (Anonymous, 2011).
