Stress studies were conducted to determine the effect of calcium and exogenous amino acids on the accumulation of prollne and total free amino acids. It was observed that stress treatment showed marked increase in the accumulation of prollne (0.665 mg/g dw) and total free amino acids (3.600mg/g dw). Calcium treatment leads to the significant accumulation of proline (0.828 mg/g dw) and total free amino acids (4.267 mg/g dw) at PEG -4 level of stress. Application of exogenous amino acids like glycine,alanine, proline, lysine, glutamic acid and threonine were tested for the accumulation of these metabolites. Exogenous lysine and threonine caused more accumulation of proline whereas, glycine and proline lead to marked promotion of total free amino acids. These accumulants are known to ameliorate the effect of stress. Present study showed that calcium plays important role in increasing the level of these amino acids and during drought their accumulation in crops proves to be fruitful.
