The International Symposium on Refugees in Africa

The International Symposium on Refugees in Africa: Renewed Partnership between Japan and UNHCR, which was organixed by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), was held at the United Nations University Building in Tokyo on June 19 and20. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) currently implements assistance operations for some 20 million refugees and internally displaced persons in every corner of the globe. In recent years, UNHCR has been placing increasing importance on support activities for displaced persons in Africa, who constitute roughly a quarter of the world's refugee population. In addition to providing support for post-conflict reconstruction projects, the Japanese government, recognizing the importanceof the positive contributions that returnees can make in the future development of their countries, has been supporting the UNHCR refugee and returnee programs for over a decade.
