Nanotechnology comes of Age

After Information Technology and Biotechnology, it is now the turn of Nanotechnology to shine as an innovative discipline with tremendous potentials to change the way we live. From being a historic subject of an animated academic discussion in mid-1980s, nanotechnology has now emerged as a major engine capable of giving a push to industrial growth, health care system as well as cutting edge engineering research. No wonder then that it would soon be a subject of a full time engineering, for the future of mankind will be shaped by the micro and mini devices whose birth has been made possible by advances in Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology, often referred to as 'God of Small World', involves the manipulation of materials at atomic and molecular levels to reduce the size while, at the same time, packing them with tremendous punch. As pointed out by venture capitalist and co-founder of Sun Micosystems, Vinod Khosla, India could emerge as a global leader in Nanotechnology if research and development activities in the area are pursued in the right way. It is in the fitness of things that Amity Group of Educational Institutions headed by Dr Ashok K Chauhan, the former Adviser to the Department of Science and Technology has set up an Institute of Nanotechnology. And if everything goes on as planned, it would offer M Tech degree course in Nanotechnology for the first time in India.
