Technical analyst, Patrick Farenga, explains how, using Microsoft Windows, it is possible to directly connect a machine to a PC to achieve real-time control without the need for a PLC. Windows is a general-purpose operating system designed to allow a wide range of application programs to operate, such as accounting programs, engineering tools, multimedia, games, desktop publishing, Internet browsing, etc. This design paradigm makes user input paramount, so mouse and keyboard commands are responded to first, often overriding other system operations. This and other standard Windows operations, intended to ensure general usability, have made industrial application developers wary of operating with Windows.
