USB 3.0 industrial vision cameras are becoming an increasingly popular and cost-effective choice for a host of vision applications due to their 'plug'n'play' connectivity and fast data transmission rates Early manufacturers of USB 3 cameras utilised their own proprietary software and drivers for interfacing, but the introduction of the AIA 'USB3 Vision' standard defined a manufacturer-independent standard protocol, allowing camera interchange independent of manufacturer, without the need for any changes to the software. However, since modern CMOS image sensors provide a host of capabilities that are not all supported in the USB3 Vision standard, the proprietary software solution is still very popular since it allows manufacturers to utilise as many of those features as they wish. Since many manufacturers use similar sensors, this means that the software provides differentiation between camera models.
