Derek Goodwin, 1920-2008 Obituary

With the death of Derek Goodwin on 14 May 2008 at the age of 88, ornithology has lost an outstanding, largely self-taught, internationally respected authority on the behaviour, ecology and taxonomy of birds, especially those belonging to the families Corvidae, Columbidae, Phasianidae and Estrildidae. The books he wrote about them, Pigeons and Doves of the World (1967), Crows of the World (1976) and Estrildid Finches of the World (1982), are authoritative classics. In addition, he had published three other books and numerous articles and scientific papers, some of them in Ibis. He was particularly proud of his highly readable book Birds of Man's World (1978), but his earlier ones, Bird Behaviour (1961) and Domestic Birds (1965), are just as enjoyable and informative.
