Efficient beef production does not take place without a well planned management program. A profitable beef cattle program must have as its ultimate goal to sale of a desired product to the consumer at a price that returns a reasonable profit to theproducer of that product A well planned beef production program therefore must include not only a plan to produce beef efficiently but also one targeted for a specified consumer. The management plan should begin with an analysis which in eludes availability of resources such as land, labor, pastures, livestock, facilities, supplemental feed, marketing alternatives such a direct sales, or sales through a central market; and identification of a product desired by the general public, e.g., light calf, heavybeef from animals weighing 900-1200 pounds (409-544 kilograms), sales of breeding animals, etc. Once an analysis is made a strategy to accomplish the goal can be developed. It is not the intent of this report to emphasize the analytical aspects of a beef management plan but rather to present information on elements of a successful management program that must be modified to fit the needs of each beef producer.
