Steam cooking extrusion for tropical freshwater fish feeds

To date in the Philippines, extrusion technology has been used mainly for the production of human snack foods and petfoods. However, at Vitarich Corporation we find that extrusion techniques also are cost effective for some spealised animal feeds, such as high quality finfish feeds and 'creep' feeds for baby pigs. Steam conditioning followed by 'wet' cooking extrusion is a process that cooks and shapes the mixed feed to a specified degree through a combination of high temperature and high pressure, These conditions physically modify the individual feedstuffs and the feed mixture at an accelerated rate. In processing finfish feeds, extrusion offers several important advantages over conventional steam conditioning and ring die pelleting.
