P74B eyed for livestock industry

The government plans to infuse P74 billion, mostly for credit support, into the livestock and poultry industry, up to 1998 in order to enhance its productivity and competitiveness. President Ramos, revealing this recently, said the industry must be able to expand its export market "beyond the niche market it is now limited to." He noted that the industry is saddled with serious problems like unstable supply of feedmeal due to poor corn harvest, threat of animal epidemic such as hoof-and-mouth disease and lack of quality abattoirs and processing plants.
