Clinical paratuberculosis (Johnes disease, or MAP (Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis) is a notifiable disease in cattle, sheep, goats and farmed deer in Austria, leading to the culling of affected animals. Additionally, a voluntary MAP-control and surveillance programme for cattle has been established in the province of Tyrol. This programme is based on the evaluation of the MAP-herd status by boot swab sampling, followed by individual faecal testing in positive farms. With more than 4 000 participating farms, the MAP-positive herds decreased from 7.5 in 2013 to 0.5 in 2019 within the programme. Due to an observed increase of paratuberculosis in small ruminants, a national survey, evaluating the MAP-seroprevalence in sheep and goat isbeing performed.
