Thomas Bowrey was born in London in 1659, and his life until his death in 1713 covers a historical period of great significance for England and for the wider world. As a nineyear- old child he left England for India, but not until he had experienced the Great Fire of 1666 and the fearsome plague of 1665 which killed his father. From his years of growing up in India, to his voyages and later business life back in London he led a complex and sometimes contradictory career over years which saw major change and development, especially in the establishment of the East India Company and all the vicissitudes of exploration and trade to India and the Far East.
