A water management system using innovative computer technology to control the release of saline water from the Ravensworth open cut coal mine in the Hunter Valley into the Hunter river has won Peabody Resources Ltd the 1995 NSW award for environmental excellence. The company gained the award in a ceremony held December 1 by the organisers, the State Minerals Advisory Council. Ravensworth beat two other finalists, Climax Mining Ltd for its rehabilitation of the Frenchman's gold mine near Orange, and Kembla Coal and Coke Pty Ltd for a seismic exploration program near the Appin mine. The computer system at Warkworth links the release of surplus water to windows of opportunity when the Hunter river is in flood or experiencing a release of water from an upstream dam.
