Redescription of Sternopygus obtusirostris (Gymnotiformes: Sternopygidae) from the Amazon basin, with description of osteology, ecology and electric organ discharges

Sternopygus obtusirostris is recognized as valid and redesciibed using features of external morphology, meristics, pigmentation, osteology, and electric organ discharges (EODs) It is known from the Central Amazon of Brazil from localities adjacent tothe main stem of the Amazon river between Tefé, Amazonas and óbidos, Pará. It is also known from the lower and middle Rio Negro. It occurs in blackwater rivers and their seasonally inundated floodplain lakes and forests. It is absent in Whitewater rivers, várzea floodplains, and blackwater forest streams of the Amazon's terra firme.
