Xstrata Copper was established as a single global commodity business led by Charlie Sartain at the start of 2004. Working with Santiago Zaldumbide on the zinc lead business, Sartain and his team have made great progress in transforming the former MIM operations at and around Mount Isa in north Queensland by improving profitability and securing the long-term future of these assets. Efficiency programs have delivered real term benefits of 52m US dollars, mainly as a result of improvements in operating throughput at the copper smelter and cost savings relative to 2003.
