Each year the World Gold Panning Association (WGPA) holds a world championship in one of the twenty countries that are members. The decision as to where to hold each championship involves many factors, and Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada, was a perfect choice. The excitement was gold-a ton of it! On July 15, 1897, in San Francisco, two ships, the Excelsior and the Portland, arrived two days apart from Skagway. Newspapers heralded their arrival, spreading the word of a gold strike like wildfire. The newspapers reported the ships were loaded with gold from Dawson City, Yukon Territory. A major rush was on.
