Since most land in Vermont is privately owned or withdrawn in state forests, state parks, or wildlife management reserves, care must be taken to avoid entering areas that are closed to prospectors. Hobbyists using gold pans or sluices are generally permitted on most streams as long as they do not dig away the banks.
