This volume is the Third Edition of a well-respected textbook on schizophrenia. Like its predecessors, it is broad in scope, as shown by its division into four main sections. The first of these involves 'Descriptive Aspects', which includes 8 chapters that cover the phenomenology, major clinical and cognitive dimensions, time of onset, course and nature of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The 'Biological Aspects' section includes 14 chapters that focus on the etiology of schizophrenia, such as its epidemiological, genetic, environmental and secondary medicaleurological contributing factors, and on biologically-based consequences of these causes, as assessed by cognitive, electrophysiological, neuroimag-ing, neuropathologicai, neuropharmacological and preclinical (i.e. animal models) methods. The 'Physical Treatments' section contains 4 chapters that focus on principles and efficacy of antipsychotic drug treatments and 2 that focus on neurological and metabolic consequences of such treatment. The 'Psychosocial Aspects' section contains 5 chapters that focus on psychosocial stressors, non-pharmacological interventions, available mental health services and economic and societal costs of schizophrenia.
