Breathtaking Kija Blue: Plumbing the depths of one of Australia's most spectacular waterlogged caves

JULY 2006 and I'm 95 m below the surface of the craggy Kimberley landscape exploring the water-filled cavern of Kija Blue. It's pitch-black, the kind of darkness found mly in the bowels of the earth, save the beam from my head torch. Something is obviously wrong... My guide line — my only tangible link to the surface — is broken and waving alarmingly in the water with no sign of the other end. Three deep breaths. Stay focused. I decide to retrace my path — to try to find my dive buddy's line. Palpable relief washes over me when I do. But the fun and games are only beginning.
