THE SNAPSHOT PHOTO Mascots of War (AG 84) is of my father, Walter Scipio Mactaggart, feeding the wallaby he took to Egypt as a mascot for his Light Horse unit. I have the original (above) in a very, very old family album. His horse (right) is also onthe page, and dad told me how sad he was when he'd had to shoot his own horse before he left for Gallipoli. Another photo (above right) shows my dad and his young brother, who arrived in London at the end of the war and missed the frightful fighting. Myfather was gassed in the trenches and I remember from a very young age how bad he was. The photo shows dad all spruced up and in his dress uniform (for the first time, he'd say).
