AUGUST 1969. It's late in Wurrgeng, the name for the cool, clear season recognisedby the indigenous people of the Top End of Australia. As the dark clouds of the Cold War gathered a world away, an unlikely team of Czechoslovakian scientists went in search of the 'lost tribe of Rembarrnga', inching their way across the ancient dreamscape of the Arnhem Land plateau. It was here, in the heart of Stone Country, that they would find Mandarg, patriarch of the Barrappa mob of the Rembarrnga. Mandarg was father to 18 children, all immersed in the ways of a culture at least 50,000 years strong. Among them was the young Tom Noytuna, then in his late teens.
