My family farms form a 690ha property about 20km west of Launceston, Tasmania. Today, native forests, plantations and shelterbelts cover about 40% of the farm. The native forest was originally grazed with livestock and occasionally selectively logged for several generations into the 1970s. Major thinning of low quality trees and regeneration works were done in 2004/05 in all our native forest, which was then shut up from grazing until the forest was restocked. Our native forest is now considerably healthier than it was 10 years ago. We are considering removing some of the overstorey when the time is right.
