摘要

Westem Australian grain grower and Council of Grain Grower Organisations (COGGO) Limited chairman Bruce Piper believes that Australian grain growers have to change their mindset of cost minimisation and address input deficiencies in order to maximiseproduction. "If Australia doesn't double its grain yields in the very near future, most of the grain growers in Australia will cease to exist," he says. Piper has been chairman of COGGO since it was incorporated in 1999 to give WA grain growers greater influence over crop breeding. He challenges grain growers who believe that insufficient water is limiting Australian grain production. He says farmers need to address issues like lime, fungicide use and macro and micro nutrients, and consider growing a smaller area properly instead of trying to minimise costs over their full cropping area.
