THE DEBATE about the future structure of Australia's meat-industry bodies is an opportunity to correct many of the problem areas associated with the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation (AMLC) and the Meat Research Council (MRC) and their predecessors. The issues of accountability to levy payers and who should determine the priorities for industry projects are of paramount importance — the industry should take the opportunity to seriously address these. No industry organisation can ever be successful when it is receiving conflicting directions from industry representatives that are unable or unwilling to c o -ordinate their views. It should not be left to the AMLC or MRC or any successors to these organisations to determine the priorities forcollective industry projects. This is what has been happening and the inevitable result is that someone is always unhappy with the outcome.
