Fibre measurement technology to link greasy wool to tops

Twelve years ago a journey started with the invention of the Optical-based Fibre Diameter Analyser (OFDA) to measure fibre diameter. Today, the OFDA family of instruments is revolutionising wool measurement by providing new information about the fibre from the sheep's back to tops and beyond. OFDA was invented by Perth engineer Mark Brims, a physics graduate. Central to his testing system, which uses a digital video camera attached to a microscope, is Brims' 1990 discovery that fibre diameter can bemeasured accurately using image analysis.
