THE HAED-LUCK tales of criminals sent in chains to Australia are some of the most likely to receive newspaper space or radio air time. There was something inherently wrong with the system that meted out the same punishment for somebody in a position of trust defrauding many thousands of pounds and a teenage girl stealing two yards of ribbon from a shop. However they would both end up in New South Wales, a world so different from the Old Country, where the safety of living in a civilised society gaveway to military rule and the associated barbarity of a giant prison.
