Last month we suggested that the Australian wheat crop would most likely come in slightly above 21 million tonnes. Our number was at the low end of the range of crop forecasters at the time. Since then growers have continued to put crop in the ground.Where there wasn't enough soil moisture, growers just went ahead anyway. This year, more than in any previous season, growers have sown to target dates, and when a break had not come they sowed into dry soils. Previous wisdom was that growers through most of southern Australia seeded wheat when soil conditions were right. When it got too late for wheat in terms of the 90 days required to grow and mature the crop, they then turned to barley with its 70-day growth cycle. However, it is necessary to makea couple of exceptions.
