Russell Eastwood, wheat breeder with the Australian Grain Technologies, contends there are several new varieties coming on to the market which offer improved levels of stripe rust resistance with good grain quality and adaptation to Victoria. Varietyselection for 2006 should be based on the varieties which return the most dollars in the farming system and which do not create disease problems (in particular varieties susceptible to rust). The most obvious effect in the farming system for many Victorian growers is the effect of CCN resistant varieties, which provide returns in subsequent crops, Table 1 (page 48). But issues such as the amount of stubble (subsequent stubble handling costs) etc are also farming system effects.
