Train traffic dispatching as an example for knowledge-based assistance in control systemsThe increasing complexity of technical Systems (e.g. factories, power plants, or traffic systems) imposes high requirements on the effective and efficient system control Modern information technology enlarges the potential for automation, but it becomesobvious that such systems can only be controlled by an optimal cooperation of automation and human experience. Between the mainly automated operative tasks on the one hand and the dispositive tasks optimized by planning tools on the other hand, complextechnical systems suffer from a gap at supporting the tactical tasks, such as dealing with process disturbances. To support the operator, knowledge-based assistant systems can be employed which develop and propose adequate solutions based on stored expert knowledge. A system for the handling of railway traffic disturbances serves as an example for the design and use of this kind of assistant systems.
